Farmers test their soils every year. They must know how much fertilizer and soil amendments they should add to a soil so they don't waste money. Homeowners can get by testing their soil every three to five years and making those necessary adjustments directed by a soil test.
One soil testing laboratory we use quite often is in Modesto California called A and L Soils Testing Laboratory. I general soil test will cost about $75. Be sure to have them analyze the macronutrients as well as the micronutrients including boron. In some desert soils boron levels can be excessively high and damage plants.
Soil tests can be difficult to interpret. Viragrow can help interpret those results for a small fee. If you are using a new soil mix from Viragrow then testing won't be required for at least three years after your purchase. However, adding a 1 inch layer of compost from Viragrow and mixing into the soil every 2 to 3 years will keep your raised beds and vegetable growing areas in tip top production.
